Reficar Refinery Expansion (Cartagena, Colombia)
Results
It took several years of planning and development to double the size of the Reficar Refinery in Cartagena, Colombia.
Reficar is owned and operated by Refineria de Cartagena, an affiliate of Ecopetrol. Ecopetrol is a Colombian-based integrated oil and gas company.
Reficar increased the capacity of its Cartagena, Colombia Refinery from 80,000 barrels per day to 165,000 barrels per day. This expansion allows the refinery to produce ultra-low sulfur gasoline and diesel while meeting all current environmental requirements.
The expansion included a delayed coker, hydrocracker, low sulfur diesel units, alky units, hydrogen plant, LPG treating units, cogen power plants, storage tanks and more. The total project cost was $6 billion.
The EPC firm on this project was CB&I. I&I Soft Craft Solutions was a subcontractor to CB&I due to our experience—we have worked with CB&I for over 40 years, including other international projects.
I&I Soft Craft Solutions installed $8,500,000 of intumescent fireproofing on structural steel during this expansion. Reficar chose to use both PPG’s Pitt-Char XP and International Paints Chartek 1709.
While on this project for two years installing the fireproofing, we hired and trained local Colombian craft workers to perform the work. Our quality and safety were rated outstanding.
